Map of our route today!
Journey
in a Nutshell
We left Chapleau, Ontario about 8 AM this morning to light snow and
frigid temperatures (see below) .... We saw 3 bobcats along the trail...
but weren't fast enough with the digital cameras, but mike got one with
his regular camera, later a very large owl was sitting in a tree next to
the trail... lots of Moose and Wolf tracks. We traveled north, stopping
for lunch in Foyelet, Ontario. We battled cold temperatures all day, with
everyone getting cold spots, nose, fingers, toes etc... Some of us spent
the evening thawing out in the hot tub and Sauna. We are off to Hearst,
Ontario in the morning.... should be off the trail by kick off of the super
bowl..

We
started the morning early, with temperatures -25 below 0, George picked
up some frostbite on his cheeks, even the donuts we got from the local
donut shop were freshly thawed... we had to nuke them in the microwave
in our room. If it weren't for the heated handle bars, throttle and helmet
shields. Along with boots rated to 100 below 0, and the expedition weight
patagonia long underwear and extreme suits, we would freeze in about a
minute. The wind chill traveling at 35 MPH at these temps is bone chilling
70 below 0.....
Pete
named his sled today... "Clifford" after ."Clifford, the big red dog" of
the children's books series. When asked why ?? his reply was "It wants
to help all the helpless little animals and protect the little people"
OK?
Sick and Sicker, both George and Julie seen here in the morning, had trouble
going up and down and around, Julie mastered the art of taking her helmet
off quickly....except for that one time..... She managed to turn
the white snow to green, brown, orange, blue and some weird shade of purple.
By lunch she had enough and loaded her sled on the trailer and rode in
the support vehicle the rest of the day. About 20 miles after we "The Woose"
got in the truck, she was pulled over by the Royal Canadian Mounted Trail
Police. Apparently it's illegal in northern Ontario to leave spots of green
snow along the side of the trail. They were gonna give us a ticket but
they let us go when we told them they were made by a girl. George on the
other hand, toughed it out on the trail and completed the days ride!
The
2001 World Championships of Snow Douching were held today, the winner Bryon
Pattullo seen here douching his victim. (click
